What we do | Our homeless project covers short term emergency support, medium term care and long term solutions. This not only ensures rough sleepers survive a freezing night on the streets but have access to basic needs, such as food, clothing, good hygiene and ongoing support into permanent accommodation and employment and become an active member of the community. Short term emergency care consists of food, clothing, sleeping bags etc which are provided through our day centre on Portland Road and through outreach on the streets in the evening. Medium term care is addressing access to good hygiene through the hygiene van, shower van and laundry van in different locations around Brighton & Hove. We also support the wellbeing of clients with access to NHS nurses, hairdressers /barbers, as well as courses for example First Aid and detox. Long term solutions look at each individual complex situation. Key workers guide clients through the options available and signpost to the appropriate support in the local area. A specially designated Key worker will support clients after they have moved into accommodation to prevent them from returning to the streets due to isolation and loneliness and temptation of old habits. We also have Gateway Women’s Centre which offers an impartial, caring and safe environment, for women who suffer with issues ranging from the mundane to the complex. At Gateway, we see women struggling with difficult relationships, mental health problems, loss and bereavement or housing and financial issues. We also help those who have previous or current experience of trauma and abuse. The project aims to reduce isolation, build resilience, and increase confidence and self-esteem. We help our clients to develop life skills and improve emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing, through practical help, courses, activities and 1 to 1 sessions. |
