What we do | Oasis Community Hub: Hobmoor is particularly focused in the South Yardley area of Birmingham. The work of the Hub includes running Hobmoor Community Centre, as well as a large number of community projects that are run alongside them to support students of the neighbouring Primary Academy, their families and the wider community. The Hub recently opened Oasis Pantry Hobmoor based at the nearby South Yardley Methodist Church. It is a 'Your Local Pantry' Community Food Store, see https://www.yourlocalpantry.co.uk/ This provides food and other essentials on a weekly basis for many local families in need. Essentially, it is a community shop using rooms in the church. Local people apply to be members or can be referred. Members pay £4 each time they come to the shop. Typically, they can choose 10 items to take away. 3 items valued at over £1.50 and 7 other items. They fill their basket with what they want just like in a shop. They can also choose free vegetables and other ‘special offers’ outside of their allocation, such as bread or eggs depending on what we receive, so nothing is wasted. The average value of the food they take away is between £15 and £20. The food pantry model seeks to empower the community. Members report that they much prefer it to a food bank because they feel they are contributing towards it financially and they can choose what they need, instead of just being given a bag of food, some of which they may not be able to use. |
What we accept |
We are happy to accept any items as the people who use our Food Pantry often ask if we have any sanitary products, nappies or cosmetics available. We support local households from a range of ages and backgrounds.
