What we do | Our brand new Moulsecoomb Community Market (based on the social supermarket model) is about giving people some dignity and choice about what food they eat as well as providing access to a more varied and healthier diet. People are asked to pay a very small, nominal feel for membership and that entitles them to choose a fixed number of items that are colour coded according to cost and/or availability. This is what residents wanted, when we asked them. Moulsecoomb is on the outskirts of Brighton comprising a large council estate - many people have lived here for years, have generations of their families living close by, so it is a close knit community. Many people in the ward struggle with day to day living and Moulsecoomb is in the top 10% of the most deprived areas in Britain. Unemployment rates are high, health outcomes are well below the national average and there is increasing poverty and hunger which the pandemic has exacerbated. But we cannot provide everything... Access to hygiene products is essential to wellbeing and to a person's sense of self worth and dignity - so wherever possible we hope to be able to offer these, too... |
What we accept |
We would like donations of products that are not only essential for immediate needs, but also the products that most of us take for granted and which make life a little easier and more pleasant!
In the run up to Christmas, we are also looking for gifts for the hampers we are hoping to make up for our members.
