What we do | Lighthouse Community Centre was founded nearly 3 years ago by a group of like-minded people who decided to tackle some deep-rooted problems in the community because they had a real understanding of the challenges people were facing. Their own lived experience, skills and the work they were already doing in the community meant they were well placed to be able to create new services and new work that would build lives, hopes and futures for years to come. Through LCC our team now provides vital support services to marginalised people and the community, running engaging and fun activities, workshops, clubs and events that inspire, educate, and help develop skills and confidence for future life. We seek to tackle the most relevant needs and their root causes in a variety of ways which provides direct support to people who are in real need and we work closely with other local organisations to ensure we continue to make a positive change to the most relevant problems. Bringing people together, creating opportunities, building bridges and seeing the impact our work has on other peoples’ lives gives us satisfaction along the way, whilst engaging in a cause that is bigger than us, motivates us and drives us to do more. At LCC we are highly responsive to need and when we see a problem, we find a solution and if necessary, we train our staff so that we can make a positive change by bringing about stability and wellbeing. Here are some local needs we previously identified prior to Covid-19 and how we adapted our services to meet those needs: SOCIAL ISOLATION - Children’s Inflatable Parties (Qualified Operators) Community Events & Toddler Group YOUTH BOREDOM - Free Media/upcycling/textiles/puppet making workshops, mobile skating & Guitar Lessons HEALTH & WELLBEING - Emotional Logic (Qualified Coaches) Paddlesports Club (qualified instructors) DEPRIVATION - Community Fridge (partnership) Homeless Soup Run and Children’s Holiday Club Since the COVID-19 outbreak we had to adapt some of our usual services in order to meet the needs of the most vulnerable people in our community through this pandemic and beyond. We did this by sourcing, packing and delivering food, hygiene and craft packages alongside our regular soup run. During the past 8 months we have partnered with many additional businesses in order to provide enough packages for OVER 3,000 vulnerable people, including vulnerable veterans. We also feed 80 to 100 people through our homeless soup run and have the privilege of seeing local people and businesses come together to provide an amazing amount of food, clothing, camping and hygiene products for us to distribute each time we go out. These projects are where we have a need for toiletries. Our next phase is to plan and put together Christmas packages for all the people we support. Adapting our services has enabled us to help people when they have most needed it, we have made a significant difference to many people's lives, even putting on free, Covid safe, bouncy castle fun events for the children we have been supporting. We also continue to provide health and well-being support through our trained Emotional Logic (EL) Coaches and have supported teenagers through our 14 day EL WhatsApp support groups and also families through our TFF project which involved teaching the EL method to parents whilst the children learnt it using the EL children’s books. We have provided Emotional Logic online ‘Personal Learning Appointments’ for people who have been in need of one to one support. |
