Vanguard Supported Housing provides help to those in need of housing, food and toiletries. They support individuals leaving long-term hospital care, homelessness and those leaving prison. For prison leavers, they create ‘starter packs’ – packages of essential toiletries such as hairbrushes, shampoo, shower gel, razors and deodorant.
“Often, those who leave prison have nowhere to go, and have no access to government support and welfare schemes for at least six weeks after their release. This leaves them with no finances, making it even more difficult for them to begin their lives again. In these six weeks, prison leavers visit the food bank, on average, two to three times for essentials.”

- Since Brexit and the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, demand on their food bank has doubled. Without the donations they receive through Toiletries Amnesty, Food Bank coordinator Pauline doesn’t believe that they would be able to provide essentials to the people they support.
- Since the beginning of the year, over 30 starter packs have been given to prison leavers. It makes a real difference as the recipients are very grateful to have their own items. Often, in prison, they have to share items, so providing items just for them allows them to regain some of their independence.
