Vanguard Supported Housing provides help to those in need of housing, food and toiletries.  Annually, they support over 15,000 people across the UK with support leaving long-term hospital care, homelessness, and prison.  For prison leavers, they create ‘starter packs’ – packages of essential toiletries such as hairbrushes, shampoo, shower gel, razors and deodorant.

“Often, those who leave prison have nowhere to go, and have no access to government support and welfare schemes for at least six weeks after their release. This leaves them with no finances, making it even more difficult for them to begin their lives again. In these six weeks, prison leavers visit the food bank, on average, two to three times for essentials.”

Pauline Gordon, Vanguard Supported Housing

Since Brexit and the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, demand on their food bank has doubled. During this time, Toiletries Amnesty have supported Vanguard through hundreds of donations from individuals in their local communities, which Food Bank coordinator Pauline doesn’t believe that they would be able to provide essentials to the people they support without.

Before signing up for Toiletries Amnesty, the organisation found that they were having to use their personal funds to purchase toiletries for their service users, an unsustainable practice that put a strain on the organisation.
